Spicy, Garlicky and Lemony Broccoli Recipe by @SpicieFoodie | #spicy #garlic #lemon #broccoli #vegetable #vegan #sidedish

As promised, here is the recipe for the broccoli pictured in the red Thai rice article. This simple stir-fried vegetable is great alongside rice, noodles or as a side dish to any meat dish. It has spicy, garlicky and lemony tones that both compliment and bring out the natural broccoli flavours. Trust me, it tastes so good you’ll end up munching on the green florets.

This recipe was inspired by one I previously shared for stir fried asparagus. It’s not in season right now so broccoli makes a fantastic substitute.

Spicy, Garlicky and Lemony Broccoli
Great alongside rice, noodles or as a side dish to any meat dish. It's spicy, garlicky and lemony too.
Recipe type: Side dish, vegetable, vegan,
Cuisine: Fusion, International
  • 1 small head of broccoli cut into small florets
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (If you have a wheat allergy use a GF brand)
  • 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
  • 1-2 tbps olive oil or sesame seed oil
  • chile flakes to taste (I used about 1 tbsp)
  • 1 tbsp, or more, of freshly squeezed lemon juice (adjust to taste)
  1. Heat the oil in a large pan or wok. Quickly saute the chile flake just until they release their scent, about 1 minutes. Be careful not to burn them. Add the soy sauce and minced garlic, then add the broccoli florets. Combine the ingredients as best as possible. Allow the broccoli to cook to desired consistency and make sure to stir often to prevent burning. If desired add more oil or a splash of water to prevent it from sticking to the pan. Once broccoli is to desired tenderness add the freshly squeezed lemon juice, stir until well combine. Serve as desired.

Did I mention how fast and easy this is to prepare? Plus it’s super healthy and low-calorie too, can’t be that.

You know what would have made the broccoli taste even better? If the chile flakes were swapped out for some Smoky Bourbon Pepper Blend by Tonguespank Spice Co.

Smoky Bourbon Pepper Blend by Tonguespank Spice Co.“This blend begins with the sweet aroma of smoky morita chipotle peppers, adds depth and complexity with garlic and bourbon, and finishes up with a slow habanero-and-ghost burn that builds as long as you keep eating it.” Now doesn’t that sound like an awesome flavour explosion?

I love the touch of lemon juice, which I would never have put with this dish. I just never thought of it though I have made something similar for years. Gorgeous, gorgeous photos as always. And I am completely intrigued by these products–this could even make me like grappa perhaps, something that would thrill all the Italian relatives!

The lemon is a great addition to so many vegetables, it brings out extra flavour.

Definitely, I’m not Italian but love the sound of the grappa mix.:)

Mmmmm, the broccoli sounds delicious. I’m guilty of just dousing it with some lemon every time I make it, so this is easy enough to pull off on a weeknight. Thanks for sharing it!

14 Spicie Foodie October 6, 2013 at 2:33 PM

It is so easy, and yes perfect for weeknights. Thanks Mindy!

Thank you for the fabulous photos . . . I also seem to have a new and wonderful heading [or have I really been so 'out' of it?] looks great!!!. . . . I LOVE broccoli and eat it 3-5 times a week . . . have to admit I do cook it more or less ‘your’ way most of the time . . . so perchance a clap for both :D !!

22 Spicie Foodie October 6, 2013 at 2:34 PM

That’s great that you eat it so many times a week — very healthy, and also that we prepare it the same. Thanks Eha!:)

I’ve had the heading or banner set up like that for a few months now, but thanks for noticing!

A tablespoon of red pepper flakes sounds about right! I love spicy. ;-) And garlic, and both go so well with broccoli. Super recipe – thanks.

That looks so good and I love that it’s so simple! I wish my husband liked broccoli… I guess I’ll have to make it for myself for lunch one day.
