Sunday Snapshots : Postcards From Prague 2

February 19, 2012 by Nancy Lopez-McHugh

Wether traveling to a new city or staying right in our own neighborhoods, my husband and I love exploring our surroundings. To us there is no better way to take in the history, culture, architecture and sheer beauty of a place. Exploring has always been one of our favorite pastimes. Perhaps it is no wonder that we have lived in so many cities and places. Adventurers at heart we are.

Often times when I need to refresh or distress an exploratory walk is the only cure. My favorite walks are those of winding cobblestone streets beneath my feet, camera in one hand and in the other hubby’s caressing hand. Though he can’t always join me for those walks I still like to go off exploring on my own. The photos I am sharing with you today are from one such exploratory walk around Zizkov, a neighborhood in Prague. Enjoy!

I turned the corner off a busy street and came upon this scene. This adorable doggie was guarding the entrance to a wine bar.

I approached and it was like I wasn’t even there. Look at the way he is sitting. So adorable!

I asked Mr. Pup if I could go inside and enjoy a glass of wine. But no such luck. He was a hard core bouncer. Instead I admired him and left him to his duties.

Further down the street I came across an old Trabant. Perhaps one of the few remaining in the country. Everyone drives such nice new cars here.

Minding my business I looked up towards the tv tower. This thing was walking towards me. It is an alien baby. What happened to it’s face? It was freaking me  out so I got out of there. Quickly.

As I walked further down the street I came upon an old gated cemetery. It is the Old Jewish Cemetery in Zizkov or Starý židovský hřbitov na Žižkově . The cemetery was founded in 1680 for Prague’s Jewish community.

According to this website, Prague City Line, burials took place up until 1890. There are 40,000 people buried here. Among them many famous Jewish personalities such as Rabbi Ezechiel Landau, Eleazar Fleckeles, and Jonas Jeiteles, to name a few.

The cemetery was so beautiful and hopefully a place where loved ones found comfort. I was lucky to stumble upon it on a sunny day when the sun rays casted beautiful light and shadows.

No matter if it is a new place or the city you live in, there is always something new to discover.

Thank you for stopping by and reading another installment of my Sunday Snapshots. Check out the previous Postcards From Prague here, Postcards From Prague: Last Days of Summer. The YBR signup will be posted tomorrow. Happy Sunday everyone!

I agree with Rosa-my favorite photos here are the black and white cemetery ones. However, they all are stunning!

You’re one after my own heart. I love to explore, too and, yes, even cemeteries. (Some of my friends find it odd, but I find them fascinating.) And I can’t imagine a lovelier city to explore than Prague.

It must be so inspirational to live in Europe and take a walk. I live in California where we go out from garage to a parking lot of your destination. We walk inside the building and then we take a car to next stop. We need to purposely take a walk or else you end up in a gym for walking. ;-). Enjoyed reading this post and looking forward to next.

      Hi Nami,
I have to say that it really is inspirational. All the time people in the US spend in their cars is not something I miss. Besides not stretching your legs you miss out on so much that you wouldn’t if we went for a walk. I think I’ll always be a city dweller. Thanks :)

The baby statues are way too creepy for me, but the photo is great, in fact they are all fantastic! And that pup is so adorable :)
