One of my goals for 2012 is to become, or at least try to, a better baker. When it comes to cooking savory foods I’m pretty darn good at it. I don’t say this with ego but rather with a sense of accomplishment. Teaching myself to cook is something I am very proud of. But when it comes to my baking, well that is not something I flaunt.
A couple months ago I purchased the Kindle edition of The Bread Baker’s Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread. It is a huge and wonderful book by Peter Reinhart. I love that is covers pretty much every type of yeast bread I’ve wanted to make. The amount of information and step-by-step guides are great. Can you tell I’m really loving this book?
As I flipped through the pages the recipes I wanted to try right quickly grew. I think I overwhelmed myself because once I was done I had no idea what to bake first. I decided to start with a bread that one I cannot get here, and also one I was familiar with the results of. You probably already figured out that the recipe I chose was hot dog buns.
Though the hot dog buns took a long time the recipe was great. My husband doesn’t like sesame seeds so I excluded them on half of the buns, and on the others I used black sesame seeds. I won’t be publishing the recipe, but I do plan on doing a proper recipe and book review for the next bread I bake from the book. For now I just wanted to share these photos.
It has been nearly 10 years since we ate hot dogs like this. Can’t tell you how satisfying and delicious they were. And yes those are corn chips in the background, this Mexican loves her corn chips. Happy Sunday!! Tomorrow you can signup for July’s YBR, hope to see you there.
Beautiful, your hot dog buns turned out perfectly!
Thanks Laura!
Hi.. since foodbuzz switching to dailybuzz, I starting to follow your blog, so I can keep updated your blog post, I’ll very happy if you willing to keep in touch with me too :) your hot dog bun looks fantastic! I think you’re not only good at cook something savory but baking too.

Hi Tya,
Thanks for the follow, I’ll stop by yours in a bit. Thank you, I’m trying:)
Homemade hot dog buns are terrific and I love this book! Your rolls look beautiful.
Cheers,
Rosa
Thanks Rosa! I know the book is so good, I can’t seem to put it down:)
lovely – hope you share the recipe for the same Nancy
You’ve inspired me, Nancy. I’ve owned that book for a while but haven’t tried a single recipe from it. Your hot dog buns look perfect!
Hi Jean,
Oh you should bake something from it. The hardest part is choosing one recipe. Thanks:)
Wow. Your hot dog buns look terrific. They really do! Just about perfect.
Thank you Sarah:)
I’m impressed! It’s so easy to buy packaged hot dog buns (and some of the bakery ones are pretty good), but these are beautiful! Lovely light in your photos. Sounds like a terrific book – I’ll be looking forward to a review. Thanks.
Unfortunately where I live, in Europe, hot dog buns like these are unheard of. So I have to make them myself. But quite honestly homemade always tastes better than store bought. Thanks:)
Nancy…I have the book too :) Your hot dog bun looks great….the rich shinny brown soft crust…yummy! Have a great day ! Will be sending in my July round up :)
Hi Elin,
That’s great! Thank you, I just followed the great instructions. Can’t wait to see your submission.
They say that cooking is an art but baking is a science. These are some beautiful rolls and I’d love the recipe.
Well, I was never good at science so that might explain it, lol:) Thanks!
i don’t really fancy baking too. :(
That’s too bad Michelle. I actually quite enjoy it but fear that my results aren’t always great. Good thing there are bakeries for that:)
Perfectly backed hot dog buns!!! Looks very tempting :)
Thanks Nandita!
Seriously – the ultimate hot dog! Those buns definitely are better than what we find in our stores!
Thank you Laura!
These look perfect! Subscribed so that even without Buzz, I won’t miss a post!
Hi Michelle,
Thanks! I’ll stop by your and also subscribe.
Oh I bet this was so delicious!! I rarely get “excited” to eat hot dogs, but for hot dogs with these hot dog buns… YES!!!
I also don’t get excited about hot dogs, we hardly ever buy them. The buns were really good:)
These buns look wonderful. I will have to look for the book. I love baking bread. On another note, I can’t imagine going without a hot dog on a bun for 10 years!
Hi Cynthia,
Yes, do check out the book it’s so great. It is a really long time, don’t know why it took me so long to bake the buns.
Talk about better hot dog buns-these just make the experience over the top tasty! Beautiful job and exceptional photos:-)
Aw, thanks Patty. It means so much hearing it from you:)
Nothing better then homemade bread! I like first photo – the best. I am on the diet now, so no buns for me, but will definitely bookmark this recipe!
Hi Yelena,
So true, from the process to the smells, and to tasting it- it’s just great.
Oh wow Nancy, these are fantastic! What a great job you did, and the book sounds like a must have :)
Thanks so much Alisha:)
I went out and purchased the book. Which recipe did you use? pg or title?
Hi Karina,
I have the Kindle version so page number is irrelevant. The title is “White Breads: Three Multipurpose Variations”
I’m sure you are going to love the buns and all of the recipes.
Enjoy!
