Sunday Snapshots: This Week’s Market Finds

December 9, 2012 by Nancy Lopez-McHugh

Sunday Snapshots: Quail Eggs, Persimmon, Brussels Sprouts, Bavarian Bread and Grapefruit Beer | Market Finds by Spicie Foodie

The last few market trips I’ve seen these tiny spotted eggs. I didn’t know at first that they are quail eggs. I have also never tried them, have you? Not knowing what to do with them I repeatedly passed them up until this week. From what I read they taste like regular eggs except they are tiny. I’m really excited to cook these itty-bitty eggs and will share my “creations” soon.

I also picked up a loaf of bread that smells like heaven. It was still warm -which is something I cannot resist. The loaf was labeled King Ludwig Bavarian bread. The crust is crusty and the inside is airy and light. It turns out that it is made with rye, spelt and malt. The taste is nutty and slightly sweet. I was so excited to find it because I’ve really wanted to taste spelt bread. Yay! I’m going back for another loaf tomorrow.

Whenever I find fresh Brussels sprouts I have to buy them. I prefer them fresh but won’t complain if only frozen are available. This time instead of roasting I shredded them and sauteed with a little olive oil then topped with Amelia’s Spicing pecans. We both loved how great the Brussels sprouts tasted in this new cooking way for us. Persimmon was on sale so I grabbed a couple Persimmon to make my Avocado and Serrano Ham Salad.

The last new market find was this weird flavor Weizen bier or wheat beer. Can you see the flavor? It is Grapefruit! I’ve tried cherry but never other fruit beers so I simply had to taste it.

The smell was sweet, with a typical wheat beer scent as well as hints of grapefruit. It tasted just as it smelled and really good. The color stayed cloudy like a Weiss beer but it didn’t maintain the head. Instead moments after pouring the head fizzed down the same as a soft drink. At only 2% alcohol I could easily drink…about 5 of these before feeling tipsy. Unfortunately I only had one though. (lol) I hope the market carries it long term because this would be a great beer for hot summer days.

I love quail eggs!! I have put them poached on pizza – be careful, they cook REALLY quickly. I also could not resist that bread. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to find great dark bread in my area – I know that’s something you can find much more easily where you are. Lucky. : )

      Hi Trixie,
Yeah, I remember your pizza. Thanks for the tip I’ll try not to over cook them. Oh you’d love the bread! That’s too bad I don’t think I could live without dark bread.:)

How I miss the European markets! The spelt bread looks like something I’d pick up and demolish in 1 day ;).

‘These are a few of my favourite things’ as the song says. Haven’t used quail eggs much at home but they seem to appear on so many restaurant menus; love the look of that bread: well, have loved all my many visits to ‘Mad’ Ludwig’s castles also – ‘Linderhof’ being the fave; enjoy brussels regularly, oft finely slice and use in a stirfry! But, I would not like that beer :D !

I love quail eggs and can even find them pickled here in Mexico. The pelt bread look fabulous and the grapefruit beer a bit strange!

You obviously have some great fun choosing your products at the market. Great atmospheric photos as always. I like the idea of those fruit beers.

I love quail eggs – we used them in some dishes in Japan but I rarely find them here. I love the color of your backdrop board. Not sure what color you call it in English but very beautiful! I enjoy peeking a bit of your life and your finds from the market!
