As promised, here is the recipe for the broccoli pictured in the red Thai rice article. This simple stir-fried vegetable is great alongside rice, noodles or as a side dish to any meat dish. It has spicy, garlicky and lemony tones that both compliment and bring out the natural broccoli flavours. Trust me, it tastes so good you’ll end up munching on the green florets.
This recipe was inspired by one I previously shared for stir fried asparagus. It’s not in season right now so broccoli makes a fantastic substitute.
- 1 small head of broccoli cut into small florets
- 1 tbsp soy sauce (If you have a wheat allergy use a GF brand)
- 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
- 1-2 tbps olive oil or sesame seed oil
- chile flakes to taste (I used about 1 tbsp)
- 1 tbsp, or more, of freshly squeezed lemon juice (adjust to taste)
- Heat the oil in a large pan or wok. Quickly saute the chile flake just until they release their scent, about 1 minutes. Be careful not to burn them. Add the soy sauce and minced garlic, then add the broccoli florets. Combine the ingredients as best as possible. Allow the broccoli to cook to desired consistency and make sure to stir often to prevent burning. If desired add more oil or a splash of water to prevent it from sticking to the pan. Once broccoli is to desired tenderness add the freshly squeezed lemon juice, stir until well combine. Serve as desired.
Did I mention how fast and easy this is to prepare? Plus it’s super healthy and low-calorie too, can’t be that.
You know what would have made the broccoli taste even better? If the chile flakes were swapped out for some Smoky Bourbon Pepper Blend by Tonguespank Spice Co.
“This blend begins with the sweet aroma of smoky morita chipotle peppers, adds depth and complexity with garlic and bourbon, and finishes up with a slow habanero-and-ghost burn that builds as long as you keep eating it.” Now doesn’t that sound like an awesome flavour explosion?
This month I have the pleasure of being sponsored, and in turn supporting, a fantastic small startup called Tonguespank Spice Co. based in Chicago, Illinois. Check out their button on my sidebar ➞. Zack, the owner, is currently raising funds through a Kickstarter campaign to take his product to all of America. If you love spices then you have to support Tonguespank.
Go on, check out the video to learn all about this flavourfull company, help support a small business go national, and have a chance to try the product for free! Click here!

I agree, and hope they go international so you and I can give them a try. Thanks, Rosa!:)
Did you say spicy, you got me. Absolutely love the photography
Thanks Simi!
Healthy and so beautifully GREEN:)
the spices look super interestinga nd the packaging cute too!
Thanks Monique! I love their labels and jars, super cute.:)
I love the touch of lemon juice, which I would never have put with this dish. I just never thought of it though I have made something similar for years. Gorgeous, gorgeous photos as always. And I am completely intrigued by these products–this could even make me like grappa perhaps, something that would thrill all the Italian relatives!
The lemon is a great addition to so many vegetables, it brings out extra flavour.
Definitely, I’m not Italian but love the sound of the grappa mix.:)
A good set of spice blends, really like their packaging.
This broccoli looks mighty healthy and good looking.
Me too, they look wonderful! Thanks Ash.
I love broccoli plain or seasoned. Great green photos!
Thanks!
Mmmmm, the broccoli sounds delicious. I’m guilty of just dousing it with some lemon every time I make it, so this is easy enough to pull off on a weeknight. Thanks for sharing it!
It is so easy, and yes perfect for weeknights. Thanks Mindy!
G’day and STUNNING photo Nancy, once again, true!
Your broccoli dish is almost glowing with healthiness too!

Thanks Laura!
Just bought a head of broccoli yesterday…this recipe comes just in time!
Enjoy your broccoli, Angie!
Thank you for the fabulous photos . . . I also seem to have a new and wonderful heading [or have I really been so ‘out’ of it?] looks great!!!. . . . I LOVE broccoli and eat it 3-5 times a week . . . have to admit I do cook it more or less ‘your’ way most of the time . . . so perchance a clap for both :D !!
That’s great that you eat it so many times a week — very healthy, and also that we prepare it the same. Thanks Eha!:)
I’ve had the heading or banner set up like that for a few months now, but thanks for noticing!
What fabulous photos with all those hues of green – my favourite colour.
Thank you Suzanne!
That looks so incredibly delicious and easy too. Those TongueSpank spices look good too. I like the cool little corked bottles.
A tablespoon of red pepper flakes sounds about right! I love spicy. ;-) And garlic, and both go so well with broccoli. Super recipe – thanks.
Thanks John!
How delicious!!
I really need to be eating a lot of vegetables at the moment after two weeks holidaying. This dish looks so tasty and healthy :)
Thanks Julie!
Loved the spiced up broccoli!! I could eat just a bowl of it. :)
Nice and spicy, the way you like it:)
Now that’s a side dish! What a beautiful bowl of broccoli and love the simple seasoning. Definitely need to check out that smokey bourbon salt blean and all the others as well. I love finishing salts! Beautiful pictures!
MJ, I think you would love the seasonings — being a fellow chile-head.:) Thanks!
A dish as healthy and heavenly as it can get!
Out-of-the-world photography and a lovely, warm recipe made my time at your post well-spent :)
Love.
That looks so good and I love that it’s so simple! I wish my husband liked broccoli… I guess I’ll have to make it for myself for lunch one day.
