Oh, hot sauce you can make so many things better.
Raise your hand if you love hot sauces? Now how many of you enjoy trying out new flavours and heat levels of that spicy liquid? I do too.
Hot sauces, and spicy foods, are more popular than ever, and with good reason. Hot sauces are a very convenient way of adding some heat and additional flavourings to your food. I’m personally a huge fan and I reach for a bottle at least once a day; So when I heard about a monthly subscription service for hot sauces, I was ecstatic. The company is (appropriately) named Monthly Pepper Box. It was created and is run by two brothers, Nick and Andrew, whom, needless to say, have a huge love for hot sauces.
Monthly Pepper Box’s service offers hot sauces right to your door. Each month the box contains three different, and new, artisan hot sauces. With each box the brother’s choose specific hot sauce companies to feature that particular month: Some months it can be three different bottles from one company, or it can be one bottle from three different companies — So you’re always getting something new. Additionally the hot sauces and brands come from all parts of American and range not only in heat but in flavours too.
I think the concept is great, and Monthly Pepper Box makes it so easy to sign up and start trying out all those new flavours that you most likely not find in your grocery store. All you have to do is sign up here, and make sure to do it before the 15th of the month so you can get a box the month you sign up. If you sign up after the 15th then you’ll have to wait until the following month to receiver your first box. To clarify, the boxes are shipped out every 15th day of the month — and if you live in the US shipping is free!
So what do I personally think of Monthly Pepper Box? I love it. It’s a great idea for those of us that love hot sauce and also for people looking to try new flavours. I also really feel that you don’t necessarily need to be a huge fan or have the ability to tolerate huge amounts of heat. Because they include three different sauces in each box you will surely find a flavour and spiciness level that you’ll love and want to pour on everything.
In the first box that I received it included three hot sauces from a brand called High Octane Sauce Company. They had varying degrees of heat (but none where too spicy for my tastebuds) and all were very different tasting from each other. The firs sauce is the Hybrid Green Pepper Sauce, it tastes of roasted green chilies and it was pretty good with a mild to medium-low heat. The next sauce is called Peach Bowl Speedway and it’s made with habaneros , but because of the peaches it has more of a sweetness than heat. I don’t think it’s really hotter than the green one, maybe milder but quite good and summery tasting. The last sauce is the Anubis Chariot, and the label states that it’s made with habaneros and also includes the Morunga Scorpion, which is one of the world’s hottest pepper. This one wasn’t too bad and even though it has that super hot chile I didn’t find it inedible because of the heat. I normally can only eat as hot as a habanero, but was able to eat this sauce just fine.
Overall, I think the selection of hot sauces by Monthly Pepper Box was a good one. All three tasted great on top of chips, in bean burritos, but I can also see that they would be great for cooking too.
Since Father’s Day is right around the corner I think this would make a great gift for dad’s with a love of heat and hot sauces. The other cool thing about gifting a subscription to Monthly Pepper Box is that you can purchase a month, a three month, or a six month subscription — it will be the gift that keeps on giving!
