Homemade Goo Gone | Inexpensive and Only Two Ingredients

Homemade Goo Gone | Inexpensive and Only Two Ingredients by @SpicieFoodie

I really love upcycling things around my house. The most reused things I have are food bottles and jars, they usually become storage for other pantry staples like rice, flours, beans, nuts… Sometimes I save jars for my homemade dill pickles, jellies and jams, and pepper relish. I’ve even painted and transformed them into decorative office storage and flower vases, thanks to Pinterest. Don’t get me wrong, my house and home office aren’t overflowing with upcycled bottles and jars. I like a well organised area and can’t stand clutter.

When I save glass jars for up-cycling, I always remove the labels — how ugly would it look if I left them on?! Yuck. So obviously, after a good cleaning the jars need to have all of the labels and sticky tags removed. Normally I fill the sink up with warm water and let it sit for ten minutes to help ease the label off. Sometimes they come right off and other times, ay!

I finally grew tired of spending too much time on a silly jar. When I consulted the internet I found out about a product called Goo Gone, which apparently is the best solution for my problem. After some searches at the local stores I concluded that it isn’t sold in Mexico — at least not where I live. So being the pragmatic person I am, I sought a different solution. I discovered this homemade sticky label remover that is all natural, only needs two ingredients, is much cheaper than the brand previously mentioned, and best of all, works perfectly.

The recipes for this homemade solution are more or less the same. They call for coconut oil and baking soda. At first I tried it this way and it absolutely worked perfectly. But after a couple of batches I decided that while I love it, I really didn’t want to keep using my expensive coconut oil on it. So I started using vegetable oil with the baking soda. And guess what? It works just as great as the other version. Below you’ll find the recipe and instructions.

An inexpensive, two ingredient, all natural cleaning agent. It removes labels, stickers, and stickiness from just about any surface*.
Author: SpicieFoodie.com & Nancy Lopez-McHugh
Serves: 0
Ingredients
  • generic and inexpensive vegetable oil
  • baking soda (also known as sodium bicarbonate)
  • small container for mixing and possibly storing any leftovers
  • spoon
Instructions
  1. Select the item that needs to have the sticky mess removed. (This works on glass bottles and jars, plates, silverware...etc.) First try to remove the label/stickers by peeling them and if that doesn't work, leave to soak in water while you prepare the cleaning solution.
  2. In a bowl combine one part vegetable oil with two parts of baking soda. (For example, mix two tablespoons of vegetable oil with four tablespoons of baking soda.) Mix until the ingredients are well combined. Set aside to sit and thicken up, about five minutes.
  3. Generously rub the paste onto the part of the jar that has the remaining label/sticker/glue. Keep rubbing with your fingers or with a dish sponge until all of the stickiness and paper are off the jar. Rinse and repeat if necessary. Wash with soapy water and dry before using the item that has been cleaned with the homemade Goo Gone. Store any leftovers in a tightly sealed container.
Notes
*The baking soda can be abrasive, so if you're unsure about certain surfaces do test it out on a very small area first.

Tada! Isn’t that so easy? And cheap too!

So there you have it, no more expensive products that contain harsh chemical or toxic ingredients.

Thank your for the tip — we also save our jars. Anymore it is almost rare to get glass instead of plastic. I used to use a petroleum product on the outside of the jars — it worked beautifully but I don’t like using things like that around food. This is going to be great. Great tip.

Hi Marisa, Glad to hear that you too save jars. I know, plastic is everywhere now, I much prefer the glass and recycle what I don’t reuse. Thank you!

Hi Nancy! I just use eucalyptus oil – don’t know if you can get that in Mexico. Cheers.

Hi Jane, thank you for that tip. I wasn’t aware that eucalyptus oil would also work, good to know. I have seen it for sale at one of the health foods stores.
