Sunday Snapshots: New Foods In My New Home
Happy Sunday amigos! Today I will be sharing a few snapshots of foods from my new home. Enjoy!
After a little sunbathing we stopped for a snack; we started out with a couple of Dos XX or Dos Equis beers. (The beer is pronounced dose-EH-keys.) It isn’t a new beer to me, but it is the first time I’ve enjoyed one on the beach.
Nearly all restaurants and cafes bring their guest freshly made chips, called totopos, and their house salsas. Habanero peppers are king here so, one of the salsas is always made with them — don’t worry you can ask for less spicy ones too; we like the extra hot ones though!
These two yummy foods you see above originate in the Yucatan Peninsula. They are salbutes and panuchos, basically they are a type of corn tortilla that is either stuffed and/or topped with different ingredients — but not exactly like a taco nor a tostada. I am still learning about them and will be sharing recipes sometime soon.
This was my first shrimp quesadilla — ever. Quesadillas in Mexico are quite different than the ones in America. The main difference is that in Mexico they are made with corn masa or corn tortillas as opposed to the popular use of flour tortillas in the States. We also tend to keep the fillings and toppings simpler; for example, this is a shrimp quesadilla and it only contains cheese, shrimps and the drizzle of hot sauce I added. In some American restaurants quesadillas are usually served with sour cream, guacamole, salsa and sometimes even lettuce and other veggies are added to the plate. I prefer the simpler way.
This morning I ate my yogurt differently than I usually do, I topped it with fresh guava and a (large) drizzle of cajeta. This wasn’t the healthiest way to eat yogurt but definitely one of the tastiest.
I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to be able to buy poblano peppers, serano peppers, Hass avocados and zucchini like these.
These are tinny bananas.
And here they are next to normal sized bananas. Aren’t they cute? The taste is the same, but perhaps a bit more sweetness in the small ones. I love bananas!

I love that every time we go to the beach these little guys are close by. This birdie looked so peaceful watching the sunbathers and waves coming in.

I cannot contain my extreme jealousy. My mouth is watering — chips and salsa with dos equis? and i LOVE corn tortillas and definitely prefer them to flour (more flavor, better texture). i’ll be watching closely for your new recipes :) can’t WAIT. and the beach and fresh veggies … it’s currently -15F in minnesota so thanks for the quick reminder that sunshine exists :)

Tiny bananas are cute and so delicious. It’s not that easy to find them in Europe, but I do my best. Beautiful place.

So so jealous of everything. Yes corn tortillas are so much better. Are you sure you do not want to come vist? We just had 25 cm of snow and with the wind factor the Celcisu temp right now is -28!
