Mango Lassi with Chia Seeds: Celebrating Mango Season

Mango season is in full swing — hurray! Are you a fan of mangos? I’ve always loved them. They are just sweet enough, tender and juicy. They are delectable just raw, blended into drinks or sauces, and baked or prepared into all sorts of sweets. So so good!

Last week I bought a few too many kilos from a fruit bender that rides by my house several times a week. When I stopped him he immediately offered me a sample of his gorgeous mangos. I couldn’t refuse and I’m so glad that I didn’t, it was so juicy and delicious. And to top it all off the nice señor gave me a really good deal.

The fact that I can purchase such amazing, fresh, and quality things, like these mangos, directly from local vendors is one of the huge list of reasons why I love living here so much.

Do you see my table and its details? This beautiful piece of furniture is completely handmade by local artisans. It is so heavy, in fact the chairs weigh so much that I can barely lift or move them. This was the first piece of furniture that we bought for our house and I love it so much. Everyone that sees the table immediately wants to know where we bought it. When we tell them that it’s not only handmade, but the insanely good price, they can’t believe it.

The molcajeteand colourful pitcher are also handmade by artisans from different parts of Mexico. I love that I’ve been able to stock my kitchen with equipment that doubles as beautiful decorative pieces.

Gosh, it sounds like I’m bragging. I’m really not. I just love to support the artisans that dedicate their life to their work and craft, and I’m lucky that I live in a place where pieces like these are still made and are affordable to everyone.

I got sidetracked, sorry about that.

To use up some of the extra mangos I made this refreshing lassi. The recipe mostly sticks to a traditional Indian mango lassi recipe, but I gave it a little Mexican touch with the chia seeds (chia is native to southern Mexico and Guatemala). The drink is really good and quite hardy, so perfect for a light breakfast, after workout snack, or just as a delicious treat. You can get the recipe by clicking below, it will take you to my About.com column.

Enjoy!

  1. Oh Nancy – as always – all of your photos are beautiful, but the one with the mango seed/scraps made me smile. Once again, only you could make scraps look so good. :)
