I’ve received a few emails asking how I shot my beet photos. (These Sauteed Beets) The setup was extremely simple – indirect sun light coming from behind, a large white board to bounce more light onto the beets, a fast ISO, and a little bit of brightening in Photoshop.

The photos were shot at f4, 1/30 shutter speed, and at ISO 200. Because beets are so dark I went with a color scheme to compliment them but also make it easier to achieve proper balanced lighting. Had I used a white bowl it might have been harder to have well light beets. It could have resulted in either dark beets and an over-expose white plate, or dark beets with a properly light white bowl. Shooting conditions like this it is particularly helpful to use your camera’s Spot Metering function. Although I have been naughty and snuck ahead to the editing chapter, I will methodically read my way through everything to get the most out of this valuable resource. Now, if you could only come to Scotland and help me with our short daylight hours!

  2. Great photos! And nice tip – I almost always have my key light anywhere from the 10 o’clock to the 2 o’clock position. And always use a fill card of some sort. I always enjoy your photography – thanks for sharing.
